HISTORY

October 23, 1981 - Members of the Child Support Council Steering Committee meet to form the North Carolina Child Support Council.

 December 1, 1981 - First meeting of the North Carolina Child Support Council; The Council starts soliciting membership and nominating a Board of Directors.  By the next meeting of the Council on April 16, 1982, 198 members had joined the Council.

 

August 1982 - First edition of the Council newsletter - North Carolina Child Support Council News is published, Hugh Cole as editor.

 

March 2-4, 1983 - First Council Conference held at the Winston-Salem Hilton. It was held in conjunction with the Department of Human Resources IV-D Conference.  The DHR IV-D Conference had served as the annual statewide meeting of child support personnel up until this point.  This conference drew 325 participants.

 

April 18, 1985 - North Carolina Child Support Council Conference’s general session was taped for viewing statewide on OPEN/net.  The Governor declares this week during the conference as Child Support Awareness week for the first time.

 

December 6, 1985 - Board approved that membership in the Council run from conference to conference, rather than calendar year.

 

April 24, 1986 - Awards in recognition of outstanding individuals in the area of Child Support are given at the 1986 annual conference.  Those awards were given to Evelyn Dawson of Halifax County, and Elizabeth Harris of Warren County.

 

April 10, 1990 - Council tax exempt status approved by the IRS.

 

April 11, 1990 - Brochures developed by the Council to publicized child support services to the general public were unveiled at the 1990 annual Council Conference at the Grove Park Inn at Asheville. At this same event, it was recognized that the Child Support Study Commission being conducted by legislative mandate to study service delivery was based in a large part on the work done on a concept paper developed by the Council.

 

March 11, 1992 - Public Service Announcements are developed by the Council and unveiled at the annual meeting in Greensboro, NC.

 

March 29, 1994 - Annual conference held at the Grove Park Inn at Asheville drew the largest attendance ever at a Council conference with over 500 participants pre-registered.

 

February 1996 - Governor Jim Hunt joins the Child Support Council.

 

April 18, 1996 - Charlotte Council conference is the most well attended Conference in the Council's history, with over 586 attendees.  New public service announcements unveiled at this meeting as well. 

April 23-25, 1997 -14th Annual Conference held at Radisson Hotel, Raleigh.

Candy sale to raise money for scholarships begun, with approx. $4000 collected.

 

March 24-26, 1998 -15th Annual Conference held at Grove Park Inn, Asheville.

 

May 12-14 -16, 1999 - Annual Conference held at Sea Trail Resort, Sunset Beach; 1st Bob McGuire educational scholarships awarded.

 

April 26-28 -17, 2000 - Annual Conference held at Holiday Inn Four Seasons, Greensboro.

 

May 2-4 -18, 2001- Annual Conference held at Adams Mark Hotel, Charlotte.

 

April 21, 2001-1st annual golf tournament held at Baywood Golf Club, Fayetteville, with 48 participants. Over $3000 raised for the Bob McGuire Educational Scholarship Fund

 

March 20-22, 2002-First Lady, Mary Easley as keynote speaker.

 

May 7-9, 2003 20th Annual Conference held at Hilton, Wilmington with NC First Lady, Mary Easley as keynote speaker.

 

Sept. 15-17, 2004 -Decision made to move conference to autumn 21st Annual Conference held at Sheraton, Raleigh.

 

July 2005 - 1st Presidential Scholarships for conference attendance awarded to council members, Connie Bridges of NCCSE CSE and Robynn Spence of Rutherford County

 

August 17-19, 2005 - 22nd Annual Conference held at Renaissance Hotel, Asheville

 

September 13-15, 2006 - 23rd Annual Conference held at Sheraton, Atlantic Beach

Special Achievement awards were presented to Wilson County CSE and to Julie Bagley, NC CSE Central Registry Manager.  Over $8,600 raised through raffle ticket sales.

 

April-May 2006 - NCCSC Web Site Scavenger Hunt contest winner was Shakiri Weathers of Cabarrus County.

 

August 15 – 17, 2007 – 24th Annual Conference held at Greensboro Marriott Downtown, Greensboro, NC.  Ten (10) counties:  Catawba, Chatham, Guilford, Haywood, McDowell, Orange, Polk, Stokes, Vance and Yadkin, had 100 percent membership in the North Carolina Child Support Council. 

Alice McCoy, Social Service Program Consultant (Central Office) named the first black President of the North Carolina Child Support Council.

By laws were changed for council to have a 1st President and 2nd Vice President. Angela Craig was elected the 1st President and Carla West as the 2nd President. The by laws stated the person elected to the office of 2nd Vice President must have at least 2 years left on their term on the board of directors for council.

 

August 20 – 22, 2008 NCCSC held it's 25th Annual Training Conference at the Crown Plaza Resort in Asheville, NC.
